(SportsNetwork.com) - The modern-day NFL is a quarterback-driven league but if you take away the games most important position, two players stand above everyone else as the most impactful in the league, Houston defensive lineman J.J. Watt and New England tight end Rob Gronkowski. And its no coincidence that Watt and Gronk, who is preparing for Super Bowl XLIX against Seattle in Glendale, Ariz. on Feb. 1, were the only two unanimous selections to the 2014 All-Pro team. Both of those superstars are matchup nightmares. Down in South Texas, Watt is as versatile as it gets, a player capable of moving up and down the line of scrimmage in an effort to identify lesser offensive linemen. It doesnt matter if you are a guard, tackle or center, if Texans defensive coordinator Romeo Crennel or Watt himself think you are a weak link, youre going to have a 6-foot-6, 300-pound monster, who can somehow bench press a Ford F-150 while staying quicker than a hiccup, in your face. Gronkowski, meanwhile, is the offensive version of Watt, a 6-6, 270-pound traditional Y-back, who can put any linebacker on skates with his pure strength yet still beat them athletically in the passing game. If you try to defend the three-time All-Pro with a defensive back, it becomes a game of basketball where Gronk can use his imposing frame to box out the coverage. Thats why Jeremy Lanes critique of Gronkowski was such as a surprise. I actually dont think hes that good, the Seahawks nickel cornerback said Thursday. Hes OK. OK? A player like Jeremy Lane is OK, Gronkowski is on the fast track to Canton as long as he earns his stripes in the longevity department. You can give Lane credit for adopting the Legion of Boom swagger despite being a junior member of pro footballs best defensive backfield but why poke a bear who has better numbers through five NFL seasons than any other tight end in NFL history? The real stars of the Seahawks secondary are of course All-Pro corner Richard Sherman and star safeties Earl Thomas and Kam Chancellor. And no one talks more trash than Sherman yet even he deflected questions about stopping Gronkowski. I dont know -- Ill be sitting there with popcorn, Sherman said when asked what will happen when Chancellor, the hard-hitting strong safety who is the one who will be dealing with Gronkowski most of the time, and the Pats Pro-Bowler collide. It will be good football though. Dan Quinn, Seattles highly-respected defensive coordinator who is expected to become the next head coach of Atlanta after the Super Bowl, understands what he and his charges are up against. Hes a terrific tight end, Quinn admitted. I think he?s a unique guy; the run game, the pass game, the catching radius, and I think at the end of it, just great hands to finish on routes. So when hes up in the air, generally hes strong handed to come down with it so those are a few of the things that impress us about him and why we regard him so highly. Lane didnt get that memo, however. He does have a big body, (but) from what Ive seen on tape, he dont like your hands being put on him, Lane said. So if we put our hands on him and shake him up a little bit, he wont catch that many balls as he should. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion, Gronkowski mused when told about Lanes critique. Did it tick you off? a reporter pressed. It may, Gronkowski responded. Anyone want to take bets on what happens if the 190-pound Lane gets his hands on Gronk? Catch the game as the first part of a doubleheader on TSN starting at 7pm et/4pm pt. MacKinnon, the No. 1 overall pick in last summers draft, certainly has Minnesotas attention after notching seven points (one goal, six assists) over the first two games of this series. The 18-year-old rookie sensation has matched an NHL record for most points in the first two games of a playoff career, tying Odie Cleghorn (1919, Montreal Canadiens) and Barry Pederson (1982, Boston Bruins). He is also just six points behind Jaromir Jagrs record for post-season scoring by an 18-year-old. With a goal and three assists in Saturdays 4-2 win over the Wild, MacKinnon became the second-youngest player in NHL history to record four points in a playoff game. Buffalos Pierre Turgeon was four days younger than MacKinnon when he had four points on April 10, 1988 vs. Boston. MacKinnon also became the youngest player in Colorado franchise history to score a goal in the playoffs as his first-period marker tied the game at 1-1. He then helped to set up a pair of goals from Gabriel Landeskog to give his club a 3-1 lead after two periods, and that eventually allowed the Avs notch the win and go up 2-0 on the Wild in the series. The front runner for the Calder Trophy as the leagues top rookie, MacKinnon led all freshmen in points with 63 and tied for goals with 24. His postseason play so far is going a long towards making the youngster a bona fide NHL superstar. MacKinnon is enjoying the ride, but also knows this series is far from over. "You could see today that they were going tto the net more than after the first game," said MacKinnon.dddddddddddd "Theyre not going to roll over in this series Its been a lot of fun, but its going to be a tough one on Monday. It was a well rounded win, and a pretty emotional game." Semyon Varlamov stopped 30 shots for Colorado, which is 12-0 all-time in playoff series after going up 2-0. Paul Stastny posted an empty-net goal and three assists. Stastny and MacKinnon are tied for the NHL scoring lead in these playoffs with seven points apiece. Stastny has three goals and four assists. Charlie Coyle and Marco Scandella scored for the Wild, who saw starter Ilya Bryzgalov pulled after giving up three goals on 14 shots. Darcy Kuemper performed well in relief, turning away all 14 shots he faced. "Itll be good to be back home and make it uncomfortable for them," said Minnesota head coach Mike Yeo. "We had been able to shut down good players all year, and weve got to change what were doing here. Were giving them time and space, and weve got to take that away." Minnesota, which also hosts Game 4 on Thursday, was just 1-3-1 in five games against the Avalanche in 2013-14, and Colorado claimed regulation wins in both meetings in St. Paul. Colorado forwards Matt Duchene and John Mitchell are with the team in Minnesota, but neither player expects to play in this opening-round series. Duchene has been out since suffering a knee injury on March 29, while Mitchell has missed the last four games dating back to the regular season due to a concussion. This is the third all-time playoff meeting between the clubs. The Wild won a 2003 conference quarterfinals matchup in seven games, while the Avalanche knocked off Minnesota in six games during the same round in 2008. Louis, MO (SportsNetwork.com) - Vladimir Tarasenko scored 4:20 into overtime to lift the St. Louis Blues to a 4-3 comeback win over the Edmonton Oilers. Alex Pietrangelos goal with 7:35 left tied the game to help bail out Blues goaltender Jake Allen, who made 13 saves on just 16 shots. Ben Scrivens faced a barrage of St. Louis shots, stopping 37 of the 41 fired his way. T.J. Oshie started the scoring for the Blues in the first period, and Edmontons David Perron and Nikita Nikitin both scored second-period goals against their former team. Kevin Shattenkirk tied the game 31 seconds into the third period, but Mark Arcobellos goal nearly 3 1/2 minutes later gave the Oilers their second lead of the game. Oshie had three points, and Taylor Hall led Edmonton with two, both assists. Edmonton has now lost nine games in a row, picking up only three points out of a possible 18. The Blues have won six of their last nine games. The Blues could not convert a power play opportunity in overtime, but they managed to beat the Oilers for the 12th time in the last 14 meetings. Tarasenko puck-handled around Edmontons Justin Schultz to create his own shooting lane, and his shot beat Scrivens to get his 13th goal of the season. The Oilers entered the third period with a 2-1 lead, but it did not last long. Only 31 seconds into the period, Shattenkirk ripped a shot through traffic past Scrivens to tie it up for his second goal of the season. They took another lead minutes later. Arcobello beat David Backes crashing the net, and he directed Halls pass across the slot past Allen for his fifth goal of the season to make it a 3-2 game. Pietrangelo tied the game with his second goal this season as the Blues intensified their pressure. An Oshie shot in tight created a rebound, and with Scrivens down in the crease, Pietrangelo was able to pounce on the rebound and wrist it home. The Blues struck first more than halfway through the opening period. Ian Cole connected with Tarasenko with a perfect cross-ice pass, and Tarasenko dropped it off to Oshie trailing the play. He stepped into the shot and fired it over Scrivens shoulder. St. Louis was burned by a pair of former players in the second period. Perron found a soft spot in the St. Louis defense in the high slot, and he wristed a shot by Allen with traffic in front for his third goal this season. Edmonton took its first lead with less than four minutes remaining in the second. Hall found Nikitin sneaking into the play from the blue line and made a cross-ice pass that Nikitin lifted past Allen for his second of the season. Game Notes The Oilers have yet to win a game theyve trailed after the first period ... Edmonton is now 0-12-2 against the Western Conference ... This is Allens first game since goalie Brian Elliott was injured ... Blues coach Ken Hitchcock tied Mike Keenan for the sixth most wins all-time with 672 victories. You can catch all of the action live on TSN2 at 10:30pm et/7:30pm pt. The Clippers are one victory away from setting a franchise record, which was tied with a 56th triumph in Saturdays 117-101 decision over the Sacramento Kings. The 2012-13 team finished the season 56-26, but then lost in the first round of the playoffs to the Memphis Grizzlies. Los Angeles was the fourth seed last season and is trying to capture the No. 2 spot in the Western Conference. L.A. is locked in at No. 3 and needs to win its last two games and have Oklahoma City lose at home to Detroit on Wednesday. The Pacific-champion Clippers and Thunder split four meetings this season. The Clippers, who will visit the Portland Trail Blazers Wednesday, improved to 2-2 on the homestand with a convincing victory over the Kings at Staples Center. Blake Griffin scored 27 points and handed out nine assists, while DeAndre Jordan had 21 points, nine rebounds and seven blocks. Chris Paul posted a near triple-double with 17 points, 10 assists and seven rebounds for the Clippers, winners in 19 of the last 23 games and owners of a 33-7 home record. Only Indiana (35-6) has a better record at home. "Were still playing for something," Paul said on the teams website. "We can keep building confidence on defense. Were at our best when were running and getting stops." The Clippers are the best scoring team in the NBA at 107.9 ppg. They have reached 100 or more points in each of the last eight games and are 35-12 since January 1. Denver is playing out the string and will miss the playoffs for the first time since 2002-03. It has been playing better down the stretch with three straight wins and four in the past six games. Injuries and lack of chemistry under head coach Brian Shaw have hampered the Nuggets and theyll try to end the season on a high note. The Nuggets are coming off Saturdays 101-94 win versus the Utah Jazz, as Kenneth Faried posted 24 points with a career-high 21 rebounds. Faried is posting an average of 19.9 points and 11.0 rebounds since March 1. Randy Foye netted a team-high 26 points and Evan Fournier came off the bench and supplied 23 for Denver, which scored 67 points in the second half after failing to record at least 20 points in each of the first two periods. "The effort of the guys competing and playing hard I thought everyone contributed in their own special way," Shaw said. "The guys really have something going and Im proud of them the way they are finishing up the season." Shaws words were a far cry from how he felt during the season when he questioned the teams pride and effort. The Nuggets are 14-26 on the road and ended a six-game slide as the visitor with a win at Golden State on April 10. In other team news, guard Randy Foye has made 186 3-pointers this season -- good enough for second in team lore behind Dale Ellis 192 baskets from downtown (1996-97). Denver guard Ty Lawson (knee) is expected to miss Tuesdays game against the Clippers and hasnt played since April 4 at Memphis (4 games). Los Angeles has lost two of three games to Denver this season and is 1-4 in the previous five meetings between the teams. The Nuggets, though, have dropped three in a row and six of seven games at the Clippers. EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. -- New York Giants running back David Wilsons NFL career is over after two seasons because of a neck injury. The 23-year-old Wilson was told by doctors Monday that he risked more serious problems if he kept playing. He underwent fusion surgery to repair vertebrae and a herniated disk in his neck in January. Then at practice last Tuesday, Wilson caught a pass and ran with his head down into the back of an offensive lineman, a hit that caused numbness in his hands and lower extremities. He missed the final 11 games last season after being diagnosed with spinal stenosis, a narrowing of the spinal cord. "I dont want anybody to feel sorry for me, or pity me," he said in a statement released by the team. "I lived my dream. A lot of people only get to dream their dream. I lived that dream. Now I have a chance to dream another dream and live that, too." Wilson was drafted in the first round, 32nd overall, out of Virginia Tech in 2012. As a rookie, he rushed for 358 yards and scored four touchdowns while making his mark as a kick returner. Wilson led the NFL with 1,533 kickoff return yards, a team record. But he got off to a slow start last season before the injury. Wilsons condition is not expected to require additional surgery or therapy. Wilson met Monday morning with Dr. Russell Warren, the teams physician, and Dr. Frank Cammisa, the chief of spine service at New Yorks Hospital for Special Surgery. Cammisa performed the spinal fusion surgery on Wilson. They told him he needed to stop playing football. Wilson then returned to the Giants training facility and met with team President John Mara, general manager Jerry Reese and coach Tom Coughlin. Coughlin was prepared for the worst before getting the official medical reports about Wilson. "We had pretty much braced ourselves for not good news, although trying to be optimistic and not trying to go ahead and make some kind of a statement prior to getting that information," he said on a conference call. "We were certainly excited thinking that everything was going to be OK with David. But in the back of your mind: How are you going to be affected as a team? It would be irresponsible not to give some thought to that." Wilson had only 146 yards on 44 carries and one touchdown in five games last season before the injury. He struggled with holding onto the ball, losing three fumbles. Against New Orleans his rookie season, Wilson set a team record for all-purpose yards with 327. He had 227 yards on kickoff returns and added 100 rushing. The Giants will now move on without Wilson. In the preseason opener against Buffalo on Sunday, rookie Andre Williams led a power running game. He had 48 yards on seven carries and a TD. Veteran Peyton Hillis added 36 yards on seven attempts, and newcomer Rashad Jennings gained 23 yards on seven carries and caught three passes for 20 yards. "Im encouraged, period," Coughlin said. "I thought eventually we got to where we ran the ball pretty well. That might not have been their (starters) in there, but still we did have some consistency with runs there." Raiders T-shirts. The Jets have now won nine of their last 11, and five of their last six road games. With the win they moved to within two points of Vancouver in the west, the Canucks holding down the eighth spot. Vancouver lost in Boston, while the other big game saw Dallas win in Phoenix. The Jets do jump ahead of Nashville, and are now tied with Dallas, one point behind Phoenix. It was the Jets 33rd one-goal game of the season. The first period was scoreless with some careless play by both teams leading to a number of scoring chances, forcing both Ondrej Pavelec and Anton Khudobin to make a number of outstanding saves. The Jets outshot the Hurricanes 11-9. The only goal of the second period came from Andrew Ladd, his 13th of the season. Ladd now 3-7-10 in the last ten games. Ladd buried a rebound of a Micheal Frolik shot, with Bryan Little also picking up an assist, giving him 13 points in the last 14 games. A key part of the game later in the period with Zach Bogosian off for holding, the Jets were nailed with too many men on the ice. So for the eighth time this season the Jets were down two men (51 seconds) and for the eighth straight time they killed it off. Other than a shot off the post, the Hurricanes did not have a shot on goal on the power play. Adam Pardy made a number of key plays including a key blocked shot. Shots in the second were 12-9 Carolina. Riley Nash tied the game early in the third, setting the stage the game winning goal with 1:03 left in regulation. Blake Wheeler started the play with a cross blue line pass to Jacob Trouba in the Carolina end. Trouba took the puck all the way around the Hurricanes goal, tried to get a pass to Mark Scheifele in front, but instead found Chris Thorburn at the edge of the circle who scored his second of the year for the win. Wheeler has 15 points in the last 114 games, Trouba nine points in the last 10 games.dddddddddddd Final shots were 29-27 in favour of Carolina. Pavelec is now 7-2 in his last nine games, allowing 20 goals against, including six games where he has allowed two or less. Al Montoya has played the other two in the 9-2 Jets run, allowing one goal in each. Bogosian for the fifth straight game led the Jets in ice time at 25:01, Trouba next at 24:13. Little had five shots on goal, four of which were great scoring chances. Face-offs very much favoured the Hurricanes, who finished at 64%. 37 hits for the Jets, Trouba leading the way with five. Trouba was a plus-1 and is now a plus-14 in the last 11 games to lead the team, Scheifele was a plus-1 and is now a plus-12 in the last 11 games and is second on the team. "It wasnt one of our best games, but we found a way," commented Coach Paul Maurice post-game. "The effort was there, our structure was good, our goalie was good. Huge penalty kills. Just wasnt anything easy about the game but we handled it well." There was a lot of line matching with the Hurricanes wanting Manny Malhotra against the Little line and Eric Staal against the Scheifele line. "Scheifele is Winnipegs dirty little secret, hes a pretty good player. I have no problem putting Scheifele out against anyone." Trouba struggled early in the game handling the puck, but Coach Maurice kept putting him out. "He had a couple of shifts that were unusual. But he wants the puck on his stick with a chance to win the game. He took it low with his head up, and he can make those big plays. Hes been on the ice for a lot of big goals." On the penalty kill, "We got bodies and sticks where they needed to be. A big block by Pardy, that shot was a bomb." Jets continue their four-game trip in Washington Thursday as for the second straight game they renew the old South East Division rivalry. (TSN Jets, TSN 1290). CURITIBA, Brazil -- Nigeria and Iran delivered the first draw of the World Cup on Monday as they ground out a scrappy 0-0 stalemate in their opening match in Group F. The draw at the Arena da Baixada in the southern Brazilian city of Curitiba followed 12 mostly high scoring and attacking games. After a first half in which Nigeria failed to capitalize on its dominance, chances were few and far between in the second. In the early passages of play, Nigeria had shown menace, with much of its attacking thrust coming down the left with Emmanuel Emenike and Victor Moses combining to cause problems for the defensively-minded Iran side. Nigeria came closest to scoring in the seventh minute when an Ahmed Musa goal was disallowed after John Obi Mikel was adjudged to have fouled Iran goalkeeper Alireza Haghighi at a corner. Iran grew more confident as the game progressed and came close to scoring in the 34th when a Reza Ghoochannejhad header required a sharp save from Nigeria goalkeeper Vincent Enyeama. In the second half, both sides were guilty of sloppy passages of play, to the growing annoyance of the mainly Brazilian crowd. Players from both sides snatched at chances, and neither goalkeeper was troubled despite some frantic late pressure in the final minutes. "They had 11 people behind the ball, which made it hard for us to create chances," Mikel said. "Its frustrating because they sat back." Nigeria coach Stephen Keshi said his team became anxious when it failed to score during a dominant opening 25 minutes. But he added: "Respect to Iran, they had their game plan to sit back and defend and they did well." Keshi, who played for Nigeria at the 1994 World Cup, is already anticipating a backlash after the draw. "Win or lose Im criticized," said Keshi, whose side won last years Africa Cup of Nations. "A draw now, Ill be criticized. Its part of the game. In my country, its win at all costs and sometimes it doesnt go that way." The best chance either side has to progress in the tournament is to beat debutant Bosnia-Herzegovina, as Argentina is the firm favourite to top the group. Lionel Messi scored one of the tournaments best goals in Argentinas 2-1 victory over the Bosnians on Sunday. Iran coach Carlos Queiroz said the result was "fair" and that his players deserved "sympathy and respect" for performing on the biggest stage despite the impact of economic sanctions on the country -- which made it difficult to arrange friendlies. "Were not here to perform the role of the happy loser," Queiroz said. "The fans need to know the conditions we have endured for three years to get here." Queiroz wouldnt talk about the teams next game against Argentina. "Now Im so tired just let me enjoy this point we collected from Nigeria," he said. The draw means the winless World Cup runs of both teams continues, dating back to France 1998. For Iran, though, this was the first time it had not conceded a goal at the World Cup finals. Andy Hinchcliffe and Neil McCann give their starting XI player ratings as England beat Scotland 3-0 at Wembley. Goals from Daniel Sturridge, Adam Lallana and Gary Cahill sealed the three points for Gareth Southgates men, who remain top of Group F with ten points. The Scots will feel the scoreline didnt reflect their performance with a number of chances to get on the scoresheet themselves, but they now drop down to fifth in the group, above Malta who are yet to register a point. Pundits Hinchcliffe, who rated England, and McCann, who provided Scotlands scores, watched the game on Sky Sports News HQ and were on hand after the game to give their ratings.EnglandJoe Hart - 7It was probably one of his easiest nights as an England goalkeeper. He had some crosses to deal with but he didnt have any shots to save. The defenders in front of him did a pretty good job as well and he kept a clean sheet. Kyle Walker - 8He was the difference for that opening goal. England like to play with attacking full backs with Walker and Danny Rose instrumental. The first two goals came form the runs that they made and the crosses they put into the box. Danny Rose - 8For similar reasons to Walker, he got forward and provided width when the wide players come in field so again, you have to give him an eight for his attacking performance. Full-backs now are such an important part of a team because they dont really play with wide players anymore, they tend to drift infield like we saw with Raheem Sterling and Adam Lallana tonight. When they do that, its important for the full-backs to not just have the energy to get over the halfway line but have the quality to deliver balls into the box and thats exactly what Walker and Rose give you. Danny Rose earned an eight from Hinchcliffe for his Wembley performance Eric Dier - 7Again, it was a relatively quiet night for him. In the first 15 minutes or so, himself and Jordan Henderson found it difficult under the high press from Scotland so the midfield three were outnumbering and making life a bit difficult, so you didnt really see too much of them in the opening exchanges. As the game went on, they got a measure of control which is what I think they are in the team to provide. They are there to do a solid job and enable the attacking players to get into the game. Gary Cahill - 7 Gary Cahill headed home the third for the Three Lions at Wembley It was a wonderful header. Defensively, Scotland should have done an awful lot more but a very difficult header so in terms of an individual piece of skill, it was a cracking header so he will be pleased with the goal he scored. He was given a bit of a tough time at the start, Leigh Griffiths was closing defenders down and making it hard for Cahill and John Stones to play out from the back which is what they want to do, but he probably didnt have too much to do.John Stones - 6.5He was still trying to play his football during the game which he is capable of doing when playing out from the back but it was unusual the way Scotland approached it.They put him under a lot of pressure and a couple of times, he was over-playing so I was a little bit concerned in the opening 20 minutes for his performance, but the longer the game went on and Scotland sat off, we saw what type of player he is. Raheem Sterling - 9 Raheem Sterling was outstanding, says Hinchcliffe Sterling was outstanding. We know what a talented player he is with the ball, but his intelligence tonight was noticeable for the first goal. He came infield, it was his shot that got deflected for Walker to move into that space. Sterling and Adam Lallana have that intelligence to pop up in a variety of positions, and Sterling switched flanks tonight as well from right to left so again, he has that versatility which gives defences an awful lot of problems. His ability to run with the ball at pace is something England dont have in abundance so he is a key player going forward. Jordan Henderson - 7 Jordan Henderson played a solid game at Wembley, according to our pundit Again, hes there for that solid role, and its not necessarily nice to look at but its not meant to be. In terms of the formation of the team, his solid and disciplined performance allowed the attacking full-backs to go forward and Wayne Rooney to be released because they know they have the defensive insurance. Daniel Sturridge - 8When he was selected for the game, people were a little bit surprised, they thought Harry Kane might play and I was a bit worried because hes the kind of player that likes to come towards the ball because when Scotland defend in numbers, Sturridge might find himself in midfield rather than playing as a striker. But his awareness and ability to score goals is beyond question. The opening goal, which was the decisive factor in the game, only Sturridge could score a goal of that quality because the cross was really fizzed at him. Daniel Sturridge netted the opener for England on Friday evening Thats why Southgate probably looked at him, and he hasnt been playing regularly for Liverpool, but he has that ability in the blink of an eye to turn a cross into a goal.Wayne Rooney - 8This is more the type of position we want to see Rooney in. In the past, weve seen him playing deeper and deeper and he can play that role with his eyes shut but we want him to have an effect on the game and play like a typical No 10. Having the likes of Dier, Henderson, Lallana and Sterling in the team means Rooney can play further forward and I think he did a really good job tonight. Adam Lallana - 9.5 Adam Lallana scored the second of Englands three goals He was outstanding and just ahead of Sterling for his performance. His header was brilliantly controlled. He is now arguably Englands most important player along with Sterling from what weve seen over the last few games.Hes got pretty much everything - a creator, a hard worker and a goalscorer. ScotlandCraig Gordon - 6Its really difficult to criticise anything about him tonight. There was not really anything he could have done about any of the three goals.Lee Wallace - 6 Lee Wallace played well despite being at fault for the second goal, says Neil McCann I felt Lee Wallace was culpable for the second goal, but played quite well apart from that so Ill give him a six.Ikechi Anya - 5Anya had a difficult evening, I felt. Yes, maybe he was playing slightly out of position tonight, but he offered nothing going forwardChristophe Berra - 5I didnt even hear the commentators mention he was playing at any point tonight. He was involved in a couple of skirmishes with Sterling, but other than that he had a pretty quiet game. You cant criticise too much, but his job is to keep clean sheets and he didnt do that.Darren Fletcher - 5 Darren Fletcher was the captain for Scotland on Friday evening His work rate was good, but he probably didnt influence the game as much as I would have wanted him to.Grant Hanley - 5Hanley threw his body on the line a number of times tonight. He couldnt really do anything about the first or second goals, but he played a part in the third goal in my opinion. He didnt attack the ball and was a bit flat-footed.James Forrest - 5He worked really hard and he had a massive chance when the score was 1-0. He really should have tested the goalkeeper, so I cant mark him too highly.Scott Brown - 6 Scott Brown returned to the Scotland set-up for the meeting at Wembley He is another player who worked hard and I would think covered an impressive amount of ground. He didnt quite take the game by the scruff of the neck, as he has in a couple of Champions League games this season.Robert Snodgrass - 5It was a poor night for him and I was disappointed. We lean on him, especially in the final third because we knew we would have to defend a lot against England. His set-piece deliveries were fine, but I thought he had another quiet game. Robert Snodgrass went close for Scotland but could not find the breakthrough James Morrison - 6I thought James was OK, considering it was the first time in a while he had been handed a start for Scotland. He tried to put his foot on the ball and make things happen.Leigh Griffiths - 5He worked hard and had one effort which went over the bar and another crucial chance when he made the wrong decision. He had a shot instead of rolling Snodgrass in and that proved to be the wrong call. "Im telling you my opinion," Bouchard was heard to say to Saviano. "So basically, Im not allowed to tell you my opinion?" "No," responded Saviano. The workout ended with the 20-year-old Bouchard hitting the ball into a nearby food court and walking off. Bouchard and Saviano have worked together since she was just 12-years-old. Its a strong relationship. Both have fiery personalities and arent afraid to show it. Saviano was not available for comment after practice while Bouchard, as is custom with tennis players, did not meet with the media on a non-match day. Several veteran journalists said that while this was an unusual exchange between player and trainer, especially considering the timing, but there is no way of knowing what impact, if any, this will have on Bouchards psyche. But if there is one thing Bouchard has shown in her still young professional career, its that she seems to show tremendouss poise under fire.dddddddddddd "She just finds a way to get herself back into sets and get herself back into matches," said ESPN analyst Darren Cahill. "And then when she gets there, shes not scared of the finish line and I think thats what her greatest quality is." "Experience-wise its a huge gap. Maria was a finalist last year, she won here the year before, shes playing better than anyone on clay than anyone right now, Shes won every Slam once and Genie hasnt even been to a final yet," added Tom Perrotta, tennis reporter for the Wall Street Journal. "Of course the odds are with Maria Sharapova. Shes been in this position many times before but Eugenie has nothing to lose so she can play with youthful abandon, go for broke and see what happens," said Martina Navratilova, who won 18 Grand Slam titles over her career. "Shes been playing well, very smart tennis. It will interesting to see if shes playing just well enough to beat Maria. We know one day she will be playing well enough to beat anybody but is that day here now?" And although English league clubs are unlikely to splash cash in January, Arsenal and Chelsea could be tempted to strengthen their squads with new strikers. NATAL, Brazil -- Greece promised goals that didnt come. Japan pressed for a victory that eluded it yet again. The ultimate result of what has turned out to be a rarity at this World Cup -- a 0-0 draw -- is that Colombia is guaranteed to move on to the knockout rounds and Greece and Japan are still clinging to life in Group C. Reduced to 10 men after captain Costas Katsouranis was sent off in the 38th minute with his second booking, Greece held on for a critical result in the group by returning to the rock-solid defence that Colombia had blistered for three goals in an opening loss. "My players were brilliant," said Greece coach Fernando Santos. "They worked hard after the red card. Without the red card we probably would have won the game." Both teams inserted new strikers in search of goals and a first victory, but ultimately the main objective was survival and both achieved that with one match left in group play. Japan would have been eliminated with a loss. Once Katsouranis was sent off after a rough challenge on Makoto Hasebe, Greece withdrew into a defensive setup and held firm. Even short-handed, Greece was better organized against Japan and avoided any critical mistakes. Japan defender Atsuto Uchida said he could sense Greece building a wall around the goal as soon as Katsouranis was sent off. "I had a bad feeling about it. It happens a lot in soccer, when a team goes down to 10, they know exactly what they need to do. And that also happens to be exactly Greeces way to fighting -- to fight by defending," Uchida said. Japan pressed forward after halftime and had several chances to score. The best came in the 68th minute when Shinji Kagawa played a long pass over the top to Uchida, who sent it back across the middle to Yoshito Okubo, who blasted the volley over the net. Greece goalkeeper Orestis Karnezis also was forced to make a diving save in injury time to preserve the draw and the point for Greece. Greece came in determined to turn around its dismal scoring history in the World Cup -- 18 goals conceded against just two scored -- inserting Kostas Mitroglou up front. Greek players had even promised goals against Japan. But Mitroglous best effort was an early volley that spun off his foot and he didnt even make it to halftime.dddddddddddd After taking an elbow in the side in the 30th minute, Mitroglou collapsed to the ground. He got up and walked off under his own power but soon determined he couldnt continue and was taken off for Theofanis Gekas in the 35th minute. Things got worse for Greece just moments later when Katsouranis was sent off. Greece retreated into its half of the field for most of the second half. Japan had 68 per cent of ball possession. Katsouranis will be suspended for Greeces final group match against Ivory Coast. "It was a terrible start, losing a man," Greece defender Sokratis Papastathopoulos said. "But we have a point and we have hope ... if things go well, let us get four points with a win in the next game -- and if God decides that we are eliminated because of the other result, so be it." Japan, which had been beaten up in a physical matchup with Ivory Coast in a 2-1 opening loss, once again had to deal with a bigger, stronger and much taller opponent. Coach Japan coach Alberto Zaccheroni dropped Kagawa from the starting lineup in surprise move, putting veteran striker Okubo up front with Europe-based star Keisuke Honda. Okubo had one of Japans best chances to score in the first half but sent his header over the crossbar in the 33rd minute Zaccheroni was frustrated Japan didnt use its speed to exploit the spaces left by Greece being short a player. A win over Colombia wont guarantee Japans moves on to the next round. If Ivory Coast beats Greece, Japan will go home. "We played too slowly," Zaccheroni said. "This is not a positive result. We absolutely needed to win." ------ Japan: Japan: Eiji Kawashima, Atsuto Uchida, Keisuke Honda, Yuto Nagamoto, Shinji Okazaki, Yoshito Okubo, Yasuyuki Konno, Hotaru Yamaguchi, Makoto Hasebe (Yasuhito Endo, 46), Yuya Osako (Shinji Kagawa, 57) and Maya Yoshida. SAN DIEGO - Dan Haren finally feels comfortable in Dodger blue. Haren didnt go with the Dodgers to Australia for their season-opening, two-game series against Arizona, so he didnt get his first taste of real action with his new team until he threw six strong innings in a 5-1 victory against the San Diego Padres on Wednesday night. "I feel like part of the team now," Haren said. "I havent done anything up to now. Im just happy that I was able to come through for the guys. "I really wasnt with the team that much," said Haren, who signed as a free agent in late November. "Teams often bond on the road. Theyre in the clubhouse a lot, on the plane or bus, whatever. So I really didnt have that. Im just glad I was able to come through, and Im looking forward to getting back home." While the Dodgers were in Arizona, Haren, their No. 4 starter, pitched in minor league games. "Man, I got my butt kicked in those camp games," he said. "The adrenaline level, theres nobody watching, its dead silence. Its hard to simulate major league innings." Haren retired the first nine batters before Everth Cabrera singled to centre leading off the fourth and eventually scored on Yonder Alonsos one-out single to right. The run was unearned because Seth Smith, batting after Cabrera, reached on catchers interference by A.J. Ellis. Haren (1-0) allowed four hits, struck out seven and walked none. The Dodgers took two of three from the Padres and now play their home opener Friday afternoon against San Francisco. The Dodgers jumped on Tyson Ross (0-1) for three runs in the first inning. Carl Crawford doubled to left-centre and advanced on Yasiel Puigs sacrifice bunt. Puig was safe when Ross throw pulled first baseman Alonso off the bag. Manager Bud Black went out to challenge the play, but umpires determined he didnt do so in a timely manner. Hanley Ramirez doubled to left to bring in both runners and then scored on Adrian Gonzalezs single to centre. Ramirez scored again in the fifth when he walked with one out and eventually came in on Andre Ethiers two-out single to right. Ross allowed four runs, three earned, in five innings while striking out seven and walking four. "His stuff was good, he just really couldnt command his fastball early in the game," Black said. "The first two innings, 50-plus pitches. He had to work awfully hard to get those six outs. He had a real tough team getting the ball in the strike zone early. "Haren, on the other hand, was getting the ball in the strike zone early. He was pretty efficient the first three innings." Los Angeles added another run in the eighth against Donn Roach, who was making his big league debut. Roach came on with two outs and allowed singles to Juan Uribe and Ellis, and an RBI double to Dee Gordon. NOTES: The Dodgers put reliever Brian Wilson on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to Monday, with inflammation in the ulnar nerve in his right elbow, and recalled right-hander Jose Dominguez from Triple-A Albuquerque. The Padres claimed LHP Bobby LaFromboise off waivers from the Seattle Mariners and optioned him to Triple-A El Paso. To make room on the 40-man roster, the club transferred right-hander Joe Wieland from the 15-day disabled list to the 60-day DL. Wieland, still rehabbing from reconstructive elbow surgery, recently had arthroscopic surgery to relieve irritation in the back of his elbow, pushing back his return. Manager Bud Black thinks Wieland can return before the All-Star break. ... Both teams are off Thursday. The Dodgers play their home opener Friday against San Francisco. HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. -- K.J. Chois early tee time and quick start moved him to the top of the rain-delayed RBC Heritage on Friday. Choi shot a 67 to get to 5-under 137, one stroke ahead of Robert Allenby and two in front of a group led by former world No. 1 Luke Donald as the second round was suspended because of heavy storms. Allenby was among 65 players still on the course when the rain hit Harbour Town Golf Links. Officials delayed the round shortly before 3 p.m. and then sent everyone home until Saturday morning after waiting through about 90 minutes of steady, heavy rain. Allenby has 13 holes to finish when play resumes Saturday morning. Donald shot a 69 and joined Billy Hurley III (69) and first-round tri-leader Scott Langley (73) in the clubhouse two shots behind Choi. Bo Van Pelt and Ben Martin were also at 3 under early in their rounds. Masters contenders Matt Kuchar and 20-year-old Jordan Spieth faltered after their strong starts at Harbour Town. Kuchar, who tied for fifth last week at the years first major, had a pair of double bogeys on his first six holes before the rains came and stood four shots behind Choi. Spieth, a Masters rookie who tied for second at Augusta National, had a 74 and was at 1-over 143 -- good enough to make the projected cut of 4 over, but well off his opening 69. Choi was four shots back of first-round leaders Kuchar, Langley and William McGirt at the beginning of the day. Based on his recent play, he didnt figure to make much of a dent in the cool, drizzly conditions. But Choi had three birdies on the front nine, including one on the difficult, par-4 eighth hole, to get into contention. He caught Kuchar on No. 16, rolling in a 20-footer for birdie. Chois usual schedule had him return home to South Korea after the Masters to help take care of his three children. However, after hearing for years how Harbour Town might suit his game, he decided to play the South Carolina course. "If you just hit it beneath the trees, its a good course to play," Choi said. "It has very small targets and this course is working well." Kuchar, the worlds sixth-ranked player, probably wished the storm had arrived sooner. His tee shot found water on the par-3 fourth hole for a double bogey. He sent his drive out of bounds on No. 6 to drop two more shots. Kuchar opened with a steady performance -- Thursdays 66 was his lowest career round at Harbour Town -- just a few days after contending in the Masters. Hell see if he can find that game once play resumes. His bad start didnt seem to bother him much. He smiled after hitting his provisional drive on the sixth hole, and then talked about the good time he and his family were having at Hilton Head. "Chasing my youngest around the beach, so had some fun this morning," Kuchar said. "Its going to be lots of games and some movies maybe the next couple of days." Allenby jumped into second after birdies on the first and second holes and was glad to get out of the inclement weather. "Its not fun when its blowing 20 miles an hour every different direction and its raining at the same time," he said. "So it was nice get out of there." Donald is coming off a disheartening Masters (he shot 79-70 to miss the cut), but he generally plays well at the RBC Heritage. Hes had four top threes in his past five appearances and, with his 69, broke par for the 17th time in his last 22 rounds here. "Its a good course for me and my results have certainly showed that in the last few years," Donald said. Divots: U.S. Ryder Cup captain Tom Watson improved on his first-round showing of 75 to shoot 73 on Friday. The 6-over 148 title was still two shots more than the projected cut line. While Watson hoped to play better, he was just as happy he got a chance to see young Ryder Cup contenders like Spieth and Patrick Reed up close. "Those were my intentions this week," he said. ... Connaughton finished with 17 points and 10 rebounds in the wire-to-wire win for the Irish (18-2, 6-1 ACC), whose only loss in the last 15 games came against No. 2 Virginia. Jerian Grant totaled 18 points, seven rebounds and six assists, Zach Auguste added 16 points and eight boards, and Demetrius Jackson scored 12 in the rout. The Hokies (8-10, 0-5) have been trending the opposite way and dropped their sixth straight overall, though the last three came against ranked opponents. Ahmed Hills 13 points paced Virginia Tech in the absence of leading scorer Justin Bibbs, who sat out a second straight game due to a concussion. Auguste was not in the starting lineup the previous two games due to an academic issue that has presumably been resolved. The 6-foot-10 forward wasted little time getting involved in his return with six points in the first four mminutes, including a dunk that provided Notre Dame with a 12-4 lead.dddddddddddd The margin grew to a dozen, 27-15, following a Grant 3-pointer, and it was a 38-28 difference at halftime. Jackson drained a pair from the long range in the first three minutes of the second half to keep the Irish in front by double digits, and Grant fueled an 8-0 run that extended the lead to 55-34. Grant assisted on a Connaughton 3-pointer, converted a three-point play and fed Auguste for a layup after picking Jalen Hudsons pocket at midcourt. Atlanta, GA (SportsNetwork.com) - Paul Millsap posted 23 points and eight rebounds and the Atlanta Hawks extended their win streak to nine games with an 87-81 victory over the Orlando Magic. Al Horford scored 17 points and Jeff Teague had 13 for the Hawks, who have not lost since the Raptors dropped them with a 126-115 decision on Nov. 26. Victor Oladipo paced Orlando with 21 points and Evan Fournier scored 18. Tobias Harris and Kyle OQuinn but recorded double-doubles in the setback. We have to beat those elite teams, like Washington and Atlanta, and we cant beat them right now, Fournier said. After shooting 6-for-22 from behind the arc over the first three quarters, the Hawks made three in a row in the fourth as they pulled away. Kyle Korver, Millsap and Mike Scott all hit from deep during a 1:45 window midway through the period. Teague followed Scotts triple with a runner to give Atlanta an 81-73 lead. OQuinn, who had eight of his 14 points in the fourth, scored on consecutive possessions around a Millsap miss to pull Orlando back within four with a minute to play. Teague and Millsap put the game away with two free throws apiece in the final minute. We needed a game like this, when things werent falling on the offensive end and we had to pick it up defensively, Teague said. Second half, I think we did a pretty good job making it tough for them. The Hawks owned a 29-26 lead after a high-scoring first quarter in which both teams shot better than 58 percent. The second quarter was a different story, as the two teams combined to shoot 9-for-44 for 25 total points. It was 40-40 at halftime. Fournier scored seven points during a 12-3 swing for Orlando to open the third quarter. Atlanta chipped away throughout the period and with 39 seconds remaining, Dennis Schroder drove and kicked to a wide open Horford, whose corner 3 tied it at 64. There will be no playoff hockey in the city of Toronto for the eighth time in the past nine seasons. This 18-wheeler veered off the road once and for all on a cloudy and cool night in Tampa, another stunning late-season collapse destroying what seemed all but certain less than one month earlier. "Obviously, Im disappointed – disappointed for Leafs Nation," said Phil Kessel, thick red stubble dotting his face after the teams 10th loss in the past 12 games. "Obviously its not good enough. I havent been good enough for the last 15 games. I need to be better." Boasting 37 goals and 80 points on the year, the 26-year-old carried the Leafs for the better part of two months in early 2014 – along with Jonathan Bernier – helping to mask the troubles of a flawed club en route to 15 wins in 22 games. He had a mesmerizing 35 points in that stretch – not to mention a dominant Olympics. But when he cooled (which was inevitable given the scorching run he was on) so too did the Leafs. Without Kessel and first-line amigos James van Riemsdyk and Tyler Bozak piling up points on the regular and Bernier no longer performing like a superhero (James Reimers struggles notwithstanding), cracks that lingered beneath the surface suddenly became too glaring to ignore amid a losing streak that hit eight sour games. Worrying defensive issues were unmasked for all to see, an endless parade of breakaways and odd-man rushes highlighting the troubles. A dominant power-play fizzled – one big factor in the top lines slowdown – coupling with a bad penalty kill for unsavoury special teams. Support staff behind Kessel, van Riemsdyk and Bozak failed to emerge. And a team that promised to be harder to play against at seasons open remained mostly the opposite. "Obviously we didnt play well enough," Kessel said. "I think both ends of the rink we didnt play well enough. We obviously didnt get it done." Back in mid-March, after a triumphant victory over the Kings – their second on the daunting California triangle – Toronto sat ahead of every team in the East but Boston and Pittsburgh, icing a three-point lead for that matter on Tampa (who is now 11 points up after Tuesdays game). There was talk of home-ice in the first round of the playoffs and a confrontation with either the Lightning or Canadiens. And then another disturbing swoon, from which they could not escape happened. "After that we never got our groove back," Kessel said. "The last 15 games we didnt get it done and thats why Im really disappointed. We just need to be better. Obviously Im not happy the way this has ended here. I dont think anyone is." Kessel has just three goals and seven points in the past 13 games – just four of those coming during the eight-game slide. Perhaps worn down by heavy minutes in an Olympic year, he could no longer shoulder the kind of burden his club required for survival or maybe the bounces, as he always describes them, simply went the other way. The Leafs are just 7-23-3 when their leading scorer fails to record a point. And yet Kessel still sits sixth in league scoring and fifth in goals, boasting the kind of sterling numbers one would expect of a top flight offensive player. There he was though after the sting of another looming spring without playoffs, bearing more than his fair share of the brunt for the second late season collapse in the past three years. It was the kind of accountability required for growth from this kind of wreckage and a sign of leadership from a player not known for anything of the kind. "Obviously Im really disappointed and I feel like Ive let a lot of people down," he said with some emotion. "(The fans) expect a lot from us. They love us. We need to be better these last 15 games. I think everyones pretty disappointed." Five Points 1. Cloud of Emotions A rarity for the Leafs head coach, Randy Carlyle didnt say a word to his team after the 3-0 loss to Tampa, which sealed their playoff fate in conjunction with a Columbus victory. "Numb and shock" were among the emotions Carlyle was experiencing afterward along with extreme disappointment and embarrassment. Why embarrassment? "Because I think we have more than what we were able to accomplish and thats the most troubling issue here is we just didnt find a way to compete to a level that was necessary and execute to a level [that was necessary]," Carlyle said, looking defeated. "We felt that this group coming into the start of the season would be a better hockey club than we had last year and I dont think we proved that." Carlyle, whose future remains cloudy at best, said plenty of time would be taken in the days ahead to analyze what exactly happened and why. "Theres going to be lots of questions and lots of prodding going on on the answers to that," he said. "We dont have the answers right now as to why it happened, but were all responsible. We win and lose as a team and thats basically the way we have to approach it now." 2. PP Demise One of the more prominent factors in the cooling off of the Leafs top line was their inability to score on the power-play after the Olympic break.dddddddddddd Kessel has just one power-play point in the past 23 games and hasnt scored there since Feb. 1. van Riemsdyk, who leads the Leafs with nine power-play markers himself, hasnt scored with the man advantage since Jan. 30 and has gone 24 consecutive games there without even a single point. Torontos power-play went 0-3 against the Lightning and is 8-57 after the Olympics (14 per cent). The unit still ranks fifth overall this season. 3. Not 100% Limited and still dealing with pain in the left ankle which sidelined him for 56 games earlier this season, Dave Bolland did not play Tuesday against the Lightning and may be done for the year. "Whats happened is hes aggravated it and its bothered him," Carlyle said. Carlyle had hoped to employ Bolland more regularly after his return from the injury last month, but the 27-year-old is simply not at 100 per cent. He garnered between 9-13 minutes most nights upon return, even rolling the ankle in some situations according to Carlyle and requiring up to 10 minutes to get back for another shift. Bollands arduous recovery from the severed tendon took longer than was expected, but it appears that even a near five-month absence may not have been enough. The Mimico native is an unrestricted free agent this summer. Its worth wondering whether hell play again for the Leafs with only two meaningless games remaining. 4. Carter Ashton It was more than two years ago that Carter Ashton was shipped from the Lightning organization to Toronto in exchange for towering defender Keith Aulie. And while the 23-year-old has dipped his toes into the NHL waters here and there hes yet to establish himself in any firm capacity. "Its been one of those that when hes come here and played with us his confidence level seems to erode whereas when he goes back to the Marlies hes the best player," Carlyle said of Ashton, a first round pick of Tampa in 2009. Ashton has scored 16 goals and totaled 23 points in 24 games with the Marlies this season, but has yet to score with the Leafs in 47 games, adding just three assists. Part of the disconnect would seem to lie in the opportunity hes been granted under Carlyle. Playing mostly on unskilled fourth lines, Ashton has averaged six minutes per game this season, held under four minutes in nine of 32 games. "We think that we have to bridge some of the opportunity for him and maybe play him a little higher in the lineup versus playing him in the fourth line position," Carlyle said. "Let him play with some skilled players and give him more of an opportunity with minutes in the hockey game." Recalled on emergency status with Joffrey Lupul sidelined for the remainder of the regular season and Bolland sore, Ashton played Tuesday alongside Nazem Kadri and David Clarkson and totaled 12 minutes. "I dont think its a question of my confidence in my abilities," he said. "Its just translating it to the NHL." 5. Check the IR One question rose above all when the Maple Leafs signed Lupul to a five-year extension in Jan. 2013: could the now 30-year-old stay healthy? More than one year later and the answer would be well, sort of. Though hell miss the final the three games of the regular season with a knee injury, Lupul did manage 69 games this season – totaling 22 goals and 44 points – the most hes played in one campaign since 2008-09 when he dressed in 79 games for the Flyers. But over the past three seasons, Lupul will have missed 59 games with a variety of injuries, which include a dislocated shoulder, fractured forearm, concussion, bruised foot, groin tear, and now an injury to the knee. And while well attuned to the maintenance of his body – a transformation that took place as he aged – its worth wondering whether Lupul can stay healthy as he enters his 30s considering the challenge it became in his mid to late 20s. Saturdays game against Winnipeg, which he left because of the knee injury, was the 600th in his career. He underwent successful arthroscopic surgery on Tuesday. Stats-Pack 8 – Times in the past nine seasons that the Leafs have missed the playoffs. 2-10-0 – Leafs record in the past 12 games. 47 – Career NHL games for Carter Ashton, who still has yet to record a goal. 24 – Consecutive games without a power-play point for James van Riemsdyk. 1 – Power-play point for Phil Kessel since Feb. 1. 0 – Victories in a start for James Reimer since Jan. 21. 8-57 – Toronto power-play after the Olympic break. 3 – Times this season that the Leafs have been shutout. 7-23-3 – Leafs record this season when Kessel fails to record a point. SALT LAKE CITY -- Sacramento blew a big lead in the fourth quarter and the Kings began to show that look of defeat. "You saw it on everybodys face. It was like Here we go again," Isaiah Thomas said. "But I just told guys, Lets just stick together. Win or lose, lets stick together this time." Thomas noticed his teammates started keeping their heads up. He saw something different in their eyes. "We stayed together and fought hard. We fought until the end," said Thomas, who scored 23 of his 26 points after halftime to help the Kings snap a six-game skid with a 112-102 overtime victory against the Utah Jazz on Saturday night. "I just wanted to be aggressive and make some plays. I saw some openings and took what the defence gave to try and get myself going. That set up everything else," Thomas said. After early foul trouble, DeMarcus Cousins finished with 28 points, dominating the paint in overtime. "We stayed poised. Usually when we get in those situations, we kind of get in a panic mode and make the situation worse," Cousins said. Trey Burke gave the Jazz their final lead at 102-101 with a 3-pointer, but the Kings scored the final 11 points of overtime. Burke finished with 19 points and 10 rebounds. Thomas clinched it when he stole the ball from Alec Burks and got a return pass from Cousins for a layup to give the Kings a 110-102 lead with 57 seconds left. "It was a big play. I didnt think Burks was going to pass it, so I helped more than I usually would," Thomas said. "I got my hands on it and then DeMarcus made a good play by throwing the ball ahead." Kings guard Ben McLemore made a 3-pointer with 3.2 seconds left in regulation to tie the game at 97-97. "Isaiah was telling me after the huddle that I was going to hit a big shot," McLemore said. "And I thought I was going to make it even though I had missed a couple of 3s earlier." Thomas added, "He knocked down the biggest shot of his NBA career so far." Gordon Hayward had 22 points for Utah, but didnt score in overtime. The Jazz were missing injured starters Derrick Favours and Marvin Williams. Thomas made two free throws to cut the Jazz lead to 93-92 with 37.9 seconds remaining. Burke and Burks each converted two free throws apiece in the final 18.2 seconds around Cousins inside shot before McLemore hit his big 3. "Weve been waiting on one of those from Ben," Cousins said. Burkes runner at the regulation buzzer bounced off the back of the iron. Burke scored five points to spark a 16-0 Jazz run in the fourth quarter that erased Sacramentos nine-point lead. Hayward capped the run with back-to-back jumpers and a free throw to make it 91-84 with 2:59 to play. "It hurts. We had the game," Hayward said. The Jazz and the Kings entered the night tied with Milwaukee for the fewest wins (4) in the NBA. Four of the defeats in the Kings six-game skid were by a combined 11 points and they looked ready to turn a corner. McLemore followed his career-high 20 points in Los Angeles with 15 points and nine rebounds against the Jazz. All the losing precipitated an impromptu team meeting at a Salt Lake City hotel Saturday morning. Sacramento coach Mike Malone asked his players for input on how they could change course. "I said we need to be tougher to guard," Thomas said. "Everybody spoke on it and Coach accepted it. And it worked. We ran a couple different plays to get DeMarcus the ball and it opened the floor." Cousins overcame early foul trouble and was extremely efficient in 28 minutes, going 10 of 15 from the field. Favours, a potential foil for Cousins who had started all 21 games this season for the Jazz, sat out with a sore lower back. "We got their bigs in foul trouble. We caught a little bit of a break with Favours not being healthy, so we wanted to establish DeMarcus in the post, feed off of him," Malone said. TSN.cas NHL Play of the Year showdown continues today with an individual effort taking on a passing play that involves nearly an entire team. The ninth match-up of the Round of 32 sees Sidney Crosby finish off a pretty sequence of passes, while Kyle Turris breaks away. For all the skill and smarts Crosby possesses, this is one highlight where he simply finds himself in the right place at the right time. Looking to expose the Washington Capitals down low on a power play, the Penguins drop four of their players below the hash marks and begin to move the disc around. The tape-to-tape action starts with Evgeni Malkin, who finds Chris Kunitz. Kunitz taps it towards the goal line for James Neal, drawing the attention of all four Capitals defenders. Unfortunately, they forgot about Sid. Neal goes cross-crease and nearly through the legs of John Carlson to find Sid wide open for the one-knee, one-time finish. Turris, though, gets to the POY showdown by going it alone. He, too, victimizes the Caps but his moves move one way: straight to the net. He barrels over the blue line freezing Mike Green, who earns a delayed penalty. He then shakes off some harassment from John Erskine before reaching for some open net with a ridiculous drag that leaves Philipp Grubauer with no chance of stopping the puck. But despite their perfect 7-0 post-season record, the Marlies wont be taking their next opponent, the Texas Stars, lightly. "We know were not going to win every game," said centre Peter Holland. "If we are going to make it to the Calder Cup (final) and were going to make a push like that, we know were not going to sweep the whole way through. Thats just not realistic." Texas (48-18-10) is the reigning Macgregor Kilpatrick Trophy winner with the leagues best regular season record. The Stars roster also boasts the leagues MVP in Travis Morin and Rookie of the Year in Curtis McKenzie. Morin leads the Stars in playoff scoring with two goals and eight assists in nine games, followed closely by Mike Heddens five goals and four assists. The series begins Friday in Cedar Park, Tex. The Stars, like the Marlies (45-25-6), swept their first round matchup against the Oklahoma City Barons and then used six games to dispatch the defending Calder Cup champion Grand Rapids Griffins. Marlies head coach Steve Spott was in Texas Sunday to see the Stars down the Griffins 7-1 in the series clincher. "Theyre the No. 1 team in the league, were an underdog, lets not kid ourselves, were an underdog," Spott said. "I sound like Bruce (Boudreau) right now in Anaheim, but we definitely are, were underdogs, we understand that, but weve been underdogs since Sept. 1 in this league." Spott, who was the head coach of the Kitchener Rangers from 2008-13 before joining the Marlies, has coached or coached against as many as six members of the Stars organization including forwards Radek Faksa and Hedden, both of whom played for the Rangers. "Theyve got depth, theyre well coached and its going to be a heck of a series," said Spott. "I think these are two premiere clubs in the league the way theyre playing right now and its going to be a tough series. I think weeve been searching for adversity.ddddddddddddI think were going to find it and its going to test our identity." The Marlies were 2-2-0 against the Stars this season losing both meetings at Cedar Park Center. Toronto was out-scored 11-2 in the losses. Spencer Abbott and Josh Leivo each had three points during the season series while Marlies leading playoff scorer Jerry DAmigo had two goals and Greg McKegg added three assists. Drew MacIntyre, who has a 1.56 goals-against average and a .949 save percentage in the post-season, appeared in all four regular season meetings, posting a 3.00 goals-against average and a .908 save percentage. An area of concern against Texas could be Torontos power play, which went 1-for-14 during the season series. In the playoffs, though, the Marlies have the top-ranked power play among teams currently playing at 25 per cent efficiency. "Weve really got to make sure our special teams are on top of it cause they can win or lose you games at this time of the year," said Holland. "Weve got to make sure our power play is scoring goals for us and our penalty kill is stopping them." Holland, who has four goals and six points in four games after missing the first three playoff games to recover from injury, didnt play in the regular season series. Spott says Holland is a key ingredient to the power play. "When you drop in Holland and you drop in Abbott, your power play becomes a lot better," said Spott. "What we do is overrated sometimes. We can put in the plan, but theyve got to execute it. "When theres something not there, Peter Holland can create something so I think thats what makes the difference. " Game 2 of the series goes Monday in Texas before moving to Toronto for Games 3-5 beginning May 28 at Ricoh Coliseum. Notes: Defenceman Andrew MacWilliam (upper body), who was injured in Game 3 of the Chicago series, will be a game-time decision for Game 1. Spott said forward Tyler Biggs has been battling a stomach virus, which caused him to lose 11 pounds in a 24-hour period this week. TORONTO - Toronto Raptors centre Jonas Valanciunas was arrested for impaired driving in Wasaga Beach, roughly two hours north of Toronto, early Monday morning. According to an Ontario Provincial Police release, Valanciunas was charged with "Exceed 80" after an investigation revealed he had been in control of his vehicle while under the influence of alcohol. OPP officers were responding to a report that open beer bottles had been spotted in a silver vehicle going through a drive-thru at approximately 2:30 a.m. Police traced the alleged vehicle to a residence nearby and Valanciunas, the driver, was placed under arrest. Its unclear whether he was alone at the time. "I hold myself to a high standard and take my role as a member of the Toronto Raptors very seriously," said the 21-year-old in a statement released by the team Monday evening. "I apologize to the organization, my teammates, my family and my fans, and regret any negativity this incident has brought upon them." The Raptors were in between a pair of days off at the time of the incident. "We were made aware this morning of the incident involving Jonas Valanciunas and are disappointed he has put himself in this situation," the Raptors added in a release. "We take this matter very seriously as we have high expectations for all members of this organization." Valanciunas is scheduled to appear in court in Collingwood on April 22, in the midst of Torontos first-round playoff series. If the Raptors second-year centre is convicted of the charge he will likely face supplementary discipline from the NBA. League precedent suggests he could face a one or two-game suspension, issued following a conviction. Wholesale Jerseys USA. TORONTO - In a trade intended to maximize the value of a player, and contract, already on the way out, the Toronto Raptors swapped the partially guaranteed deal of veteran forward John Salmons to the Atlanta Hawks for guard Lou Williams and seven-foot prospect Lucas "Bebe" Nogueira, the team announced Monday evening. Toronto will also send a 2015 second-round pick to Atlanta in the deal. Raptors general manager Masai Ujiri had been shopping Salmons and his cap-friendly contract through last weeks draft, hoping to turn him into an asset that can help the team next season. The 34-year-old can be bought out of the $7 million hes owed in 2014-15, the final year of his deal, for just $1 million if hes waived prior to Monday evening. Toronto was planing to cut Salmons prior to that deadline if a suitable trade could not be found. The Hawks are sure to do the same, saving $6 million in the process and adding to the cap space theyll have at their disposal this summer. Entering the final year of a reasonable contract that will pay him just south of $5.5 million next season, Williams is a low-risk gamble for the Raptors, hoping to add depth and scoring off their bench. One of the NBAs premier reserves when he was with the Philadelphia 76ers, the 27-year-old Williams has struggled to regain his form following surgery to repair a torn ACL in 2013. Williams averaged a career-best 14.9 points in his seventh and final campaign with the 76ers before signing with the Hawks as a free agent in 2012, sustaining the injury midway through his initial season in Atlanta. The nine-year vet appeared in 60 games last year, recording 10.4 points, his lowest mark since 2006-07. Another year removed from serious knee surgery, the hope for Toronto is that the 6-foot-2 combo guard can provide instant offence off the bench and bolster the teams depleted second unit. The Raptors ranked 27th in bench scoring a year ago. Although the acquisition of Williams shouldnt impact the future of soon-to-be free agent Kyle Lowry, as hes not considered to be a true point guard, the versatile scorer gives Toronto another option in the backcourt if Lowry or last years backup Greivis Vasquez are not retained. The move jives with Ujiris repeated philosophy of winning now while continuing to accumulate assets and build for the future. Although the Raptors should flirt with the luxury tax this coming season, assuming they re-sign Lowry, Vasquez and Patrick Patterson, they were not expected to be big players in this offseasons free agent market anyway and with Williams contract set to expire theyll still have significant cap space to work with in the summer of 2015. Ujiri had targeted Nogueira, an intriguing Brazilian prospect, in the 2013 draft but was unable to obtain a pick. Nogueira was selected 16th overall by the Boston Celtics and flipped to the Hawks before spending last season in the Spanish ACB League. The 21-year-old has one year left on his contract in Spain and its unknown whether hell be permitted to join his countrymen Bruno Caboclo in Toronto this season. Like Caboclo, Nogueira is very raw offensively and needs to get stronger to compete in the NBA but he has strong potential as a shot blocker, addressing one of the Raptors primary needs. Salmons was acquired from Sacramento in Decembers seven-player trade involving Rudy Gay, averaging 5.0 points and 2.0 rebounds in 60 with the Raptors. The 12-year vet was a big part of Torontos initial post-trade success and became a fixture in Dwane Caseys rotation thanks to his defence and leadership. He struggled with a lingering back ailment and inconsistent shooting late in the season and fell out of favour as the Raptors made their playoff run in April. Raptors forward Tyler Hansbrough had a similar clause in his contract, permitting Toronto to waive him for $1 million this weekend. However, they opted to pick up their team option and keep him around for the final year of his deal, which will pay him roughly $3.3 million in 2014-15. If waived, the savings on Hansbroughs deal would have been minimal, as they would have used the bulk of it to pay a replacement. The 28-year-old averaged 4.9 points and 4.5 rebounds in his first year with the Raptors, seeing decreased playing after the arrival of Patrick Patterson and Chuck Hayes. He figures to return as the fourth or fifth big man in Caseys rotation. Jonathan Stewart Womens Jersey. Adam LaRoche will take that. LONDON -- Fourth-seeded Grigor Dimitrov upset top-seeded Stan Wawrinka 6-2, 6-4 to reach the final at Queens Club on Saturday. He will play 10th-seeded Feliciano Lopez in Sundays final, after the Spanish left-hander defeated Radek Stepanek of the Czech Republic 7-6 (7), 6-4. "Its a good feeling," Dimitrov said. "I always wanted to be in a final out here; stepping on that (court) on Sunday means a lot to me. It has always been like one of the biggest events for me, for some reason" It was the first victory in their three meetings for Dimitrov, who at 23 is the youngest player ranked in the worlds top 20. The Bulgarian took a 3-2 lead on his fourth break point when Wawrinka double-faulted, then broke again for 5-2. Wawrinka held two break points in the next game but was unable to prevent Dimitrov serving out the set, and the Swiss also failed to convert two break points for a 3-1 lead in the second set. Dimitrov broke to lead 4-3 and held on to secure a place in his third final of the year, following tournament victories in Acapulco and Bucharest. "It was not my best match," Wawrinka said. "Didnt serve the way I wanted, and didnt move well. But Grigor was playing well, being really aggressive, serving big and mixing a lot." Despite his defeat, Wawrinka was happy with his preparation for Wimbledon, which begins in nine days. "So far its been a positive week except today," he said. "I was playing well. Im really happy with the practice session that I did every day. I had a lot of time on the grass, so its been really good for the preparation for Wimbledon." Lopez and Stepanek engaged in several highly entertaining rallies and drew enthusiastic appreciation from the spectators after their spectacular points. Lopez fired a backhand winner down the line to save a break point to lead 2-1, but failed to convert any of five break points of his own when leading 3-2. The Spaniard struggled after leading the tiebreaker 6-3, finally closing out the set on his fifth set point. Of course it wasnt, although it was fantastic, but place that game around a long bunch of duds and that would have been the perception. Instead, it came in the midst of what is turning out to be the finest World Cup group stage ever. Typically, for Brazil 2014, the game wasnt even the main story on day 10, instead the little master took over that honour. Argentina 1-0 Iran Sometimes there just has to be a winner. Someone proved right even when it just seemed they were so wrong. You will have heard by now that Lionel Messi scored a dramatic injury time winner against Iran so you probably presume that the winner I am talking about is him. I am not. Heading into this World Cup the biggest storyline of all was "can the best player in the world carry Argentina to glory and become one of the greats?" For many it was nonsense, an obsession with an individual in a team sport who cannot possibly do it all himself. As the clock ticked past the ninety minute mark that crowd smiled. Resolute Iran had defended brilliantly. In a World Cup full of swashbuckling, quick, decisive finishing, it took a footballing minnow to give a masterclass in defending. Dont be fooled, they threatened to score also, but above anything else they made world class attacking stars look very ordinary. This included Messi. It was the perfect example of a game that laughed in the face of those who demanded the Barcelona star must carry his team. A game that required complete cohesion, partnerships on the field, combining to open up an opponent. A game that, late in the first half, saw Messi pick up the ball, look up and see 11 opponents in front of him... Iran did a great job with Messi, not only marking him tightly but being so disciplined with their shape and getting extra numbers that were ready if Messi cut in with his left. Messi from deep areas likes to glide from right to left but still the Iranians blocked that path. Last weekend Messi was able to score his goal against Bosnia-Herzegovina when that key area highlighted by the square (below) was open and not blocked with defenders... A 1-2 pass with Fernando Gago and suddenly Messi is into that space, shoots to the right of the goalkeeper for the game winner. And that was how he got his goal against Iran. With the game coming to a close, Iran got too deep, Messi got a one-on-one matchup with the defender and saw space to his left if he cut in... With 11 men behind the ball, but with that crucial narrow space opening up, Messi unleashed a brilliant strike to win it... Goals change perceptions as quickly as they change games. Suddenly Messi was doing what some had demanded. Carrying Argentina on his back to a victory. It was a wonderful World Cup moment, without question, but those demanding it, should be careful what they wish for. This is not Messi of 2010 and it is not even close. Yet. By not scoring, and therefore not having a moment, in South Africa Messis legacy was seen as tarnished for not performing at a World Cup. Now he looks tired and isnt quite at the same level, but scoring, everything seems to be fine again. It just goes to show you what a staggeringly misguided argument it was in the first place. Germany 2-2 Ghana There is no room for perfection in a World Cup like this..dddddddddddd Germany, superior against Portugal, were clearly the most impressive team after the first round of games but it just wouldnt be Brazil 2014 if that was allowed to continue. Germany, much like Italy and Spain this week, spent some time in the heat of Brazil struggling to get back in a match. The big difference was they had a record breaker to bring off the bench. For the first time since 1994, the Germans trailed at the World Cup after leading and, stunned at 2-1, on came Miroslav Klose. Two minutes later he had them level, fittingly poaching at the backpost, equaling the Brazilian great Ronaldo with 15 World Cup goals. It was the fourth goal in a mad 20 minutes. Ghana had joined an ever-growing comeback club at this World Cup responding to a Mario Gotze opener with two excellent goals that highlighted some German weakness. Germanys weakness is their defence and they were easily outjumped by Andre Ayew to make it 1-1. The heat of Fortaleza certainly played a part but the tempo of their passing wasnt quick enough either and that showed when they turned the ball over on the second goal. Philipp Lahm has now had two opportunities to move back to right back in two games but so far Joachim Low has resisted. To get Bastian Schweinsteiger, Sami Khedira and Toni Kroos together, bringing more pace and power to their midfield, Lahm may need to move back to defence. Nigeria 1-0 Bosnia-Herzegovina The African momentum continued into the evening game, which was another wide open, stretched affair. The game swung in the first half when Edin Dzeko was wrongly ruled offside after putting his team ahead. Soon after, Nigeria, a constant threat down the right side, opened the scoring when Emmanuel Emenike crossed for Peter Odemwingie to smash home. The Europeans were poor in the second half and didnt threaten enough until Vincent Enyeama produced a wonderful save with his legs in the dying moments. Seen as some as a dark horse heading in, the World Cup rookies are eliminated at the first fence. Another lesson that far too much emphasis can be placed on form from qualifying, which ended eight months ago. Man of the Day Nominees Ashkan Dejagah – Iran had many stars on this day but the Fulham man was incredibly lively when they countered and could have had a penalty when tripped by Pablo Zabaleta. Javad Nekounam – If Dejagah was the star going forward, his midfielder teammate was marvelous maintaining the shape and discipline of their back lines. Lionel Messi – It could have been a two yard tap-in and it still would have been a massive moment, given the timing of the goal, but in the end it was an absolutely stunning goal. Miroslav Klose – Any player who equals any stat held by the great Ronaldo is special. Emmanuel Emenike – It was a dominant display from the forward tearing apart Emir Spahic at the heart of the Bosnian defence. The winner... Lionel Messi – Who else? What comes next? COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Ethan Finlay and Jairo Arrieta scored in the first half and the Columbus Crew beat the Chicago Fire 2-0 on Saturday night to end an eight-game winless streak. Finlay, making his first start of the season and seventh in his three-year career, scored in the 10th minute, and Arrieta followed 15 minutes later with his third goal of the season. After failing to score in his first 40 MLS games, Finlay has goals in two straight. Goalkeeper Sean Johnson came out to challenge near the edge of the box, but Finlay -- who ran behind Fire defender Greg Cochrane -- was able to dribble past him and shoot just before reaching the end line. "I did think maybe I should have taken it inside at first," Finlay said. "You saw Cochrane make a nice play and he almost got back to the line. It was a tight angle but it found the back of the net." Federico Higuain assisted on both goals, and Steve Clark made four saves for his second shutout of the season. The Crew (4-4-4) were 0-4-4 since beating Seattle on March 29. "The backline played fantastic," Clark said. "We did the little thing very well today and if you do that youre going to get shutouts." Chicago (2-3-6) was shut out for the first time this season. "Its one of those games where Columbus was better than us," Chicago coach Frank Yallop said. "They deserved to win the game." Im looking forward to playing against them, and its as simple as that.Over the weekend, an ESPN report citing unidentified sources said Suh and the Lions are preparing for the 27-year-old star to leave after this season. The report said the idea of playing in the New York area appeals to him.I cannot address that just for the simple fact that I have not spoken to any reporter about it, or any reporters about supposedly what has come out, Suh said Wednesday.Suh is in the final year of his contract. The Lions said at the start of training camp they were postponing contract talks with him until after the season, but the All-Pro hasnt seemed distracted on the field. Next up for Detroit is a home game against the Bills, who will start Kyle Orton at quarterback instead of EJ Manuel. The Lions beat Buffalo 23-0 during the preseason, but that was before the Bills even signed Orton, who was initially brought in to be a backup to Manuel. Its obviously not the quarterback that we saw earlier in preseason, but well have the opportunity to make adjustments and changes to adapt to that situation, Suh said. The Lions (3-1) are off to an impressive start this season, especially defensively. Suh is part of an imposing defensive line that also includes defensive tackle Nick Fairley, and Detroit is ranked No. 1 in the league in total defence. But even that might not do as much for Suhs profile as a move to New York would. Suh was asked how much his business deecisions can affect football decisions he will have to make.ddddddddddddFootball is football and business is business, he said. And Suh says keeping those concerns separate isnt too difficult.I think as a professional no matter what, especially being a high-profile person or being a high-profile coach, whatever it may be, in a business that you have to more or less do so many different things at so many different times, Suh said. Being able to compartmentalize things is a part of the job, so if I wasnt good at it, or if I didnt have an ability to adapt to things and understand thats what I need to get done, Id be struggling.Star receiver Calvin Johnson said the report about Suh hasnt been a big issue in the locker room. Not at all, Johnson said. I never heard of it.NOTES: Johnson did not practice Wednesday. Hes been dealing with an ankle issue, and although he played in Sundays victory over the New York Jets, he caught only two passes. Golden Tate caught eight passes for 116 yards. Almost half his yards came from yards after the catch, so that was big for us, Johnson said. ... The Lions signed RB George Winn off the practice squad, placed RB Montell Owens on injured reserve and signed RB William Powell to the practice squad. Owens has dealt with a hamstring injury this year, but coach Jim Caldwell was vague about the decision to put him on IR. Just one of those things that happens just in terms of numbers and injuries at other positions, Caldwell said. Therefore, you have to find a way to get guys up, add new guys to your squad. That was more so the issue.___Online:AP NFL website: www.pro32.ap.org and http://twitter.com/AP_NFL Wholesale Jerseys Cheap NFL Jerseys Wholesale Jerseys Authentic Jerseys From China Wholesale Jerseys Wholesale NFL Jerseys ' ' '
